Counseling is a collaborative effort between you and your therapist.  Counselors provide a non-judgmental, safe atmosphere as well as insight and perspective on your situation.  However, the biggest factor in the change process is always your willingness to be an active participant.  Through making a commitment to the counseling process by attending scheduled appointments and actively working on therapy goals outside of sessions, positive change and growth occur.  Depending on the issues that bought you to therapy, this process can take a couple sessions or it may require several months of commitment.  This is a decision your therapist will make with you during your initial appointment.  Reaching out for help is the first step.
